Princess Piper of Capalon has a life full of technology and innovation. The people in her kingdom strive for advancement and she is expected to contribute new research and technology to her kingdom as well. But that isn’t the only duty she has to her kingdom. She must also obey her sister, the Queen, and marry the smartest and brightest citizen in the kingdom in order to produce heirs that can contribute to their scientific advancements. However, Piper receives a letter telling her that her deceased mother is still alive and living in the enemy kingdom’s mansion.

Pushing aside her status as Princess of Capalon, Piper makes the journey to Mondaria under the false name Paris Marigold from Green Heights. She learns of an audition to be one of the KIng’s 100, a court of singers, magicians, and drummers. Piper’s love of singing was frowned upon and forbidden in her kingdom. Will her singing be enough to grant her a spot on the court and find her mother? Or will she be found out and executed all in an attempt to piece her family back together?

The Story

The King’s 100 is a wonderful story with elements of adventure, mystery, and love. Karin Biggs. I really enjoyed Biggs’s take on competition with a little love mixed in. As we follow our main character on her mission to rescue her mother from the King of Mondaria, we meet so many interesting and wonderful characters along the way. Each of them are going through their own struggles and Piper manages to help her friends even though they are from a completely different culture than she is. While helping her friends through their various issues and dealing with some emotional struggles within herself, she begins to lose track of the original reason that she is risking her life to be in this kingdom. The transitions between Piper actively looking for her mother and her doing normal teenager activities with her friends added a lot of flavor to this story. I am crossing my fingers that Biggs writes a sequel to this book because I cannot get enough of this story!

The Characters

Piper and the friends that she makes along her journey are just so fun to read about. Her friends really resemble my real-life friends and I found myself smiling at the book from time to time because the depiction of friendship between the characters was just so sweet.

I liked Piper’s character very much. She makes a lot of rational and calculated decisions in the book that just made sense. A lot of the time when I read books, the main character will perform some action or make some decision for no reason at all and it ends up hurting their situation in the long run. Piper makes realistic decisions, which was refreshing.

The Writing

I thoroughly enjoyed how Biggs wrote Piper’s character development throughout the book. You slowly start to see Piper’s actions, language, and mannerisms mimic that of the kingdom she is currently in. This can sometimes be forgotten in a story whenever we have a character visiting a different land with a different culture, so I appreciate how Biggs kept this consistent through her work. I also enjoyed the distinctive voice that Biggs gave each of her characters. It really helped with forming each character’s personality in my head while I was reading.
